We wanted to create a social network that would engage every member on a multitude of levels from personal, professional, to organizational. However, one of the most important benefits for becoming a member of Area Light is each member is approached with free services as a courtesy. That means as an end-user, we treat you with a level of personal service and interaction to help you optimize your online experience through the site- free of charge. Our view is you deserve this simply for joining!
Recently, we have taken a long formal introduction and consolodated it to a more concise welcome message. It remains formal enough to be suitable for people joining with professional or business interests and can be a lead into those aspects of the site too. However, we've been working on personalizing it and emphasising what we offer to even the casual explorer who has decided to join.
The new message is as follows:
Hello (Member Name), and welcome to Area Light.
We look forward to learning about you, how you discovered Area Light, and what your interests in social networking are. Have a look around and enjoy networking.
Let us know if we can be of service to you. If you like, we will be happy to give you a personal tour of the community and offer suggestions on optimizing your online experience with us.
Yours, Area Light Member Services
Our goal is to elicit a "comment back" which will direct the new member to the Area Light Member Services profile page where they can see recent comments by other members and other features. By commenting back to us on the Member Services Comment Wall, the member has now engaged us in a continuous thread- a dialogue that anyone can view as a whole by selecting the corresponding option from the Comment Wall interface.
In following up with that, it is our experience that many members will essentially default to non-action and not respond. So we may approach members based on what we see them doing or not doing- and in the context of what we are offering. From a Personal Services perspective, we try not to overload new members with correspondence. We encourage other members to greet these new members and feature them automatically in the Members directory. So we leave it to the discretion of a new member to engage Area Light Member Services as a response to our outreach, give them some room to explore or meet others at their own initiative, and use our discretion in contacting them again.
Area Light Personal Services (BETA) is a work-in-progress and we value member feedback, suggestions, and comments. We will likely follow up our greeting with an Area light Personal Services comment- especially when new members are not engaging, and offer them assistance to set up their profiles and to get situated in the social network. From there, we have a series of activities we can do to showcase those members and help them to get the best possible experience through Area Light.
We also want to know how members heard about us, because if we do well we hope to create a reputation that precedes us through the enthusiastic invitation of established members. We will be trying out this new approach and hopefully getting some interest in our free site tour. This is part of what we mean by personal service. Every member is welcomed by someone willing to be their personal guide through the community. Ideally, the example we set will be emulated by other social networkers in the community. Every member can relate as an end-user of Area Light. So the first thing we want to do is welcome every member with a personal interest in them.
