So what's up with this Area Light Logo (courtesy Tu-torial.com)?
Well there's a lot of inside jokes underlying it, namely my buddy Doug and I have always found squirrels to be the epitome of malevolence and maliciousness. It's right out of Caddy Shack, that little critter that just drives the groundskeeper crazy.
I found this logo and I couldn't resist asking permission to use it. I had been using some photos of Samoan faces covered in tatoo's to encourage new members to upload a profile pic- less they look that fierce. On second thought, I really wouldn't want to piss whoever that guy was off, so I needed a new default photo.
When I created Area Light, I had done some research and learned about how way too many sites were popping up without a lot of activity. Look onto those and you find quite a lot of empty profiles and the such. Those little rascals! I wanted Area Light to almost literally be a place where you could get lit up on your online presence and social networking activity. However, as with so many things, the challenge is in getting people to go along with it. What we have is 90% of the members joing for a moment, as if practically by accident, and then dissappearing. I try not to bother them, at the same time I laugh and think this is the problem we wanted to address.
So I'm not sure if I am Bill Murray scheming away and doomed to blow myself up in my attempts to lay out trappings for members, or if I am the squirrel out there just to run in front of people and trip them up for my own amusement!
What I do have in mind is making fun of all you little squirrels who run around in the dark thinking you can't be seen. No! We have squirrel sensors built into the Area Light on the side of our house. I got you!
I've decided to create an award to give out to members with the least complete profiles and least activity on the site. Maybe I'll scare a few of you away, but you deserve it! Lol! The Area Light Squirrel Award gives me an excuse to reach out and approach inactive members- if at least to make fun of the fact. Why? Why not?
In highschool I had a class president who was elected not because he was academic or had a lot to offer the student body, he was simply funny as heck and we all realized the value of that attitude for the highschool experience. He said stuff like, "Vote for me, because everybody else is", or " Vote me, because I'm cool and just look at the other guys", or "Vote me, why not?"
So I've got a taste for this edgy kind of humor. So are you gonna stand there whistling dixie all day, or are you going to network? (Taken from the Outlaw Josie Wales and modified for a joke). Hmmm, I wonder who should get the award first? Hmmm...didn't Doug join area Light a long time ago?
Lol!, Anthony
