The site is a mechanism that may be enjoyed as any end-user might (without obligation other than to entertain themselves online
Yes. Blog is outdated. MySpace is outdated. End users must now express themselve as network creators.

You can remain on your site without joining mine.

I feel Ning platform is one. My network, your network, are interlinking atoms within Ning.
I know some people who visit my network and never intend to join. I prefer discussing with them than discussing with members who are there I don't know why ! I never invite them to join if I know that they only enjoy to visit.
I opened a Group in another network to invite people to visit mine without joining. It failed ; I think this idea was too much in advance of our time !!! Have a view.
It is in a language (Portuguese) that I don't speak at all, but Google Languages has so improved (recently) that language is not barrier).
At that time I considered Groups as usable for that purpose. I changed my mind not to disrupt the Group architecture of my network. Main page inserts and Forums are a better solution for interlinking.
