I noticed a Ning site for Plumas Lake up here in NorCal mentioned on the Ning blog. Might be worth a look and gets me thinking about this project again.

Comment by Nascent Dynamics ( ) on June 12, 2009 at 11:42am: I like the idea of claiming NorCal as my geographic territory. I've grown up all over the place around here from Santa Rosa, to Mt. Shasta in Redding. I consider the whole "area" my home and worht shedding some light on. However, I'm also claiming Chico as my home town. What you are going to see is how I set up a social network for my community. Chicoplace is a featured social network i am making to promote the geographic networking aspect of Area Light. Should be fun. You'll also see Area Light Member Services represented as Chicoplace Member Services which shows you the portability of the service concept and suite I am developing for my business. Ideally, we create a sort of franchise out of the areaplaces and make this an online venture that makes some noise in the online social networking world.

Check out my site www.chicoplace.ning.com , but please do not join if you are not from Chico, California. It is a community specific social network I am making for my hometown and a featured extention of the Area Light concept of networking by geographic location/ networking across different social networks.

You might find it an interesting study of building Ning social networks and using geographic location as a common point of interest. More to follow here as I get into the project. I recently had ownership transferred to me and now I have complete control to change the site. Right now I'm just outlining and setting up- probably going to scratch much of the original activity and apply what I've learned through my work on Area Light.

Comment by Nascent Dynamics ( ) on April 18, 2009 at 8:16am: Today I'm following a Twittercast of someone who is going on a Saturday snowboard, skydive, and surf adventure. NorCal is one place where you could do all of these things. Technically, the Bay Area is probably where you'll find more surfing. A lot of people consider San Francisco northern California. I generally think Sacramento and above. However, as you get higher along the Pacific Northwest, the water gets extremely cold and the coast rather rocky.

I think this would make for some interesting exploration. Later on, I'm going to fire back up the group Area Light Explorer and see if I can find some adventure tour services up here that offer the Triple S experience.

Comment by Nascent Dynamics ( ) on November 9, 2008 at 5:49pm: I know this might come across as counter-intuitive, but I'm actually looking for someone to start a social network on Ning oriented to Chico. There are a handful out there I have looked into. However, the sites are essentially dead and despite several attempts to contact the administrators, the impression I have is they are unresponsive.

Now, my focus is on Area Light which is much broader than any specific area. It might seem easy for me to create another social network for Chico, however- I'm not fully interested in managing that and I have 9 other Nings I'm going to be developing to support my private business interests.

There are a couple new social networking applications being promoted in my area. However, these are basically private interest and I think they would view my activities as competitive. I also prefer to find someone who is sharing my platform because that supports my intention to promote Ning. I can help anyone set these up for free and there is no obligation for advertising nor upselling. I just need someone to put one together who would be willing to work closely with me and Area Light.

I'm hoping some of our members will take the lkiberty of creating locations by city/ town such as Chico and then representing them here. If you haven't had a chance to look into Area Light Home, I built an interactive map and put myself right at Roth Park- one of the places a lot of the local soccer games are played. I hear further North, Redding has positioned itself with a major soccer sports complex. It would be neat to go check that out. I think I'll contact the organization involved at some point to see if they want to be included in Area Light.

So I'm going to set out inviting as many people, related sites, and local businesses as I can to show what you can do when you combine social networking and real networking.
