UFC 99
I'm a fan of Congo, but had a disagreement with my teenager last night. My boy thinks he needs to work on his ground game more, and I actually think he needs to improve his striking beleive it or not. Congo is a striker, and i think he's probably as balanced as he can get training ground with Noguerra. What he needs to do now is become the striking beast he should be feared for. You saw a little of it in his fiught last night as he almost knocked out his opponent 3 times and damaged him with some knees out of the clinch. I just didn't see him imposing that game on his opponent, some new guy that appears to be an animal in his own right. We'll have to stay tuned to what happens next for both of these fighters. Why in the world hasn't Congo had a title match yet...when you've got guys like Broch Lessnar just going in and getting title matches in their first few fights? I think his coaching must be working him up to that level, but that could be strategically flawed if Congo fails to recognize and lean to his strengths.
Coincidentally, Crocop came back and seemed unremorseful to any controversy surrounding his win. I kind of like that fighter mentality. He would have won anyway. Somehow, the UFC seems to keep motivating some of the world's best fighters to come in and perform. My boy actually mentioned to me Kimbo Slice is going to be a part of The Ultimate Fighter. There's another superstar in the making who is abviously working his way up from the bottom to the top in order to prepare for the big names such as Fedor etc.
Now I have to say the Vanderlay Silva vs. Rich Franklin fight was phenomenal! I just thought it was a terrific fight and there were occassions where I think you can see one or the other fighter was knocked out on their feet. Regardless of who won, it wasn't a loss for either fighter.
I just noted the preview for Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin. That ought to be exciting. But first, we have UFC 100 coming up, and this is going to be jammed packed with St. Pierre, Thiago Alves, Dan Henderson, Michael Bisping, Brock Lessnar, and Frank Mir. Any of those fiights could make for a main event, so should be awesome!
Also, next week we have The Ultimate Fighter Finale on Spike. The fight between the full speed aggressive motors of Sanchez and Guida is going to be dynamite!
